  following on from a post of sacolton's on a recent thread.

  i hope he doesn't mind me cutting and pasting it as i want to examine it.. was jesus our god?

  Upon further Googling, I came across http://antiochapologetics.blogspot.com/2009/05/hebrew-new-testament.html, which agrees that Hebrew thought patterns are the basis of much of the non-Pauline NT, but seems to show that the actual documentary evidence so far found indicates that oral traditions may have kept the accounts alive until Greek was used to first write the NT.

  I do remember seeing scanned excerpts of Greek manuscripts with just the Tetragrammaton written in some form of Hebrew, including Greek spoofs of the Hebrew Tetragrammaton such as PIPI [that is pi-iota-pi-iota].

  I have just started a new Topic regarding "proof that the NT was likely first done in Hebrew".   Ok have you ever been asked this question in regards to Isaiah 43:10 ?

  how could god have always existed since it plainly says near the end of that verse before me there was no god formed?.

  here is the quote from the nwt and i also looked it up on numerous other translations and they all used the word before.. .

  isaiah 43:10. you are my witnesses, is the utterance of jehovah, even my servant whom i have chosen, in order that you may.

  Transliteration means that it would show the Hebrew but in English letters. Word-by-word translation would show the meaning of each word, one at a time.

  Actually, I still don't see Stephen's words as a prayer. It is just like if Sarah ever said to Abraham, "Lord Abraham, receive my gift", or if someone said to Conrad Black today, "Lord Black, please accept my apologies".

  Thanks for the tip, allelsefails. It may come in handy, but not in the ways I am interested in. I have just looked at http://biblos.com/isaiah/43-10.htm but it shows neither transliteration nor word-by-word translation.

  7 v13.... broad and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are the ones going in through it.. whereas narrow is the gate leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it.

  This is an interesting pair of questions, lurk3r. The only relevant statement that I see is at Genesis 3:24 where the characterisation is that the sword "was turning itself continually to guard the way to the tree of life" [bolding mine], thus I understand that "the cherubs and and the flaming blade of a sword" were prohibiting either Adam or Eve from partaking of that tree of life. This is the first sword the scriptures speak of, and the only time that could apply to Adam and Eve. The next scriptural reference to a sword is found at Genesis 27:40, which is in relation to Esau.

  If "worship" actually means "bow down to, honour" using proskuneo as the basis, then I see no problem with "honouring Jesus". After all, Lord is an honourary title.

  If, on the other hand that "worship" means "pray to", I'd need to see a scripture that says that someone actually prayed to Jesus, at any time. Prayer as I know it has always been scripturally directed to Jehovah, and (since Jesus' death) in the name of Jesus. Where is the proof that it is otherwise?

  re allelsefails (Post 140):— That's NOT what I mean by "You need the power of Holy Spirit", because that's not how Stephen uses this expression when he's posted recently. That having been said, I do believe that the Bible must be taken together in its entirety, and that sometimes subtle differences to one person are major differences to another, and vice versa. Proper spiritual discernment is needed to make a correct assessment. I assert that only Jehovah has the full sense of that, not even his glorified son Jesus has that discernment unless Jehovah allows it to be given to Jesus.

  Thanks, Lieu for that Septuagint understanding. It's too bad that most of us haven't been taught Bible Hebrew or Greek in any meaningful sense of the phrase. It would be useful to have access to a word-by-word transliteration and translation of both the Hebrew and the Greek.
